"Pull the Plug" Forensics Out-Dated?

According to computer forensic experts at the SANS WhatWorks in Forensics and Incident Response Summit, there is a growing interest in software that can capture the volatile data and memory in so-called "live systems." Such data is often lost forever when computer systems are turned off as part of typical forensic procedure.
"Pull the plug" is widely accepted as one of the first steps necessary to preserve evidence on a computer. However, investigators are increasingly realizing that volatile memory may contain a wide range of potentially important evidence, including file names, IP addresses, e-mail addresses, and so forth.
A number of programs are being developed to assist investigators in capturing volatile data, including mdd and win32dd, both of which are open source and free.
The tools may be particularly useful in situations where it is not possible or potentially too costly to shut down the target computer. However, forensics investigators will need to extra care to make sure that a "live analysis" does not compromise other evidence stored on the machine.
