iPhone App Distributes Possible Child Pornography

Despite its self-proclaimed purity pledge, the Apple iTunes App Store has been flirting with adult themes and content for some time now. The store is well-stocked with with apps featuring nearly-nude women in scanty bathing suits and lingerie. With the release of the iPhone OS 3.0, which includes a parental control feature, app developers are promising to include topless photos as soon as they are approved by the App Store vetting team.

The new OS gives app developers -- like the creators of Busty Buxom Curvy Cuties 3, the ability to rate their applications as 17+, for Frequent/Intense Mature/Suggestive Themes, or Frequent/Intense Sexual Content or Nudity. No one is entirely sure what those terms mean just yet, although presumably we'll know it when we see it.

One category certainly not included in Apple's 17+ rating, however, is child pornography. But the company overlooked the risks of allowing social photography apps at a time when millions of children have their own digital cameras. Last week, the app review site Krapps.com announced that during its evaluation of the BeautyMeter app, it discovered a self-uploaded photo of a mostly-nude girl who listed her nationality as "United States" and age as "15".

The BeautyMeter app is a take-off on the "Hot or Not" type of Web sites, which allow narcissistic (or self-abusive) individuals to upload photos of themselves so that others can rate them on their appearance. BeautyMeter went further by allowing users to rate the submitters on their face, their body, and their clothes. The last option was somewhat superfluous, since most people uploaded nude or partially-nude photos.

As Krapps pointed out, the girl in question may have purposely misstated her age, but that leaves the broader question of how or why the German app manufacturer, Braun Software, allowed a self-proclaimed child pornography photo into its database in the first place.

As news of the discovery spread (most notably by this Wired Gadget Lab post), Apple pulled the BeautyMeter app from its store. Braun posted a statement on its Web site, saying that it has tightened up its approval process for content.

The company also said that "in one special case we had to determine the UUID (iPhone device ID that can be seen as a kind of network card ID) - in this special case we will hand out the UUID for further steps!"

Given the enormous popularity of iPhone apps, social networking services, and digital photography, there is little question that this will not be the last time that Apple -- and other smart phone manufacturers -- wrestle with this type of issue.
