Philly Computer Techs Testify in Federal Corruption Trial
Posted by: Frederick Lane on 08 January 2009
The perils of computer tech work are on display in a Philadelphia federal courtroom, where two computer technicians are scheduled to testify against their former boss, Vincent J. Fumo, who is facing corruption charges. Fumo is a former Pennsylvania state senator.
The two technicians, Leonard Luchko and Mark Eister, plead guilty to obstruction of justice charges in 2006 for their role in wiping potentially damaging e-mails from Fumo's system. A third technician, Donald J. Wilson, has been cooperating with the Federal Bureau of Investigation under a grant of immunity.
Wilson told the court and jury that when Fumo learned that the FBI was investigating him for corruption, security on the office computer systems was dramatically increased.
Among other things, Wilson said, Fumo's staff was ordered to delete all e-mails from him, to use encryption for sending e-mails, and to give Wilson access to their computers so that he could wipe any remaining e-mail traces. Wilson testified that the so-called security measures continued for a period of time even after the FBI served a search warrant on Fumo's office.
As part of his cooperating with the FBI, Wilson turned over to the Bureau two PC Cards containing Fumo's encryption key, which enabled the FBI to read numerous encrypted e-mails.
