Beginning later this month, a group funded by the British government will examine how artificial intelligence (AI) can assist in the performance of computer and digital forensics.

The Cyber Security Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN) will bring together artificial intelligence and computer forensics experts "to explore research techniques, developments and applications capable of harnessing Artificial Intelligence and forensic computing for electronic crime investigation and case analysis."

There is widespread belief that it will be necessary to employ artificial intelligence techniques in order to effectively examine and track the vast amounts of information scattered about the Internet. Other possible uses for AI include dynamic preservation of hard drive images, extraction of relevant information from data streams, and identification of patterns of online behavior.

The KNT experts will also discuss an appropriate framework for the use of AI in criminal investigations so that evidence will remain admissible in court.

The first meeting of the group will take place on November 28, 2009 at the Knowledge Dock at UEL Docklands Campus.
